Domaine Jean-Claude Lapalu

Deze Beaujolais wijnen hebben ons betoverd. Ze zijn zo ongelofelijk puur, zuiver en elegant dat we er niet vanaf kunnen blijven. Jean Claude Lapalu heeft zich eigenlijk pas in 1995 geïnstalleerd. Daarvoor leverde hij, net als zijn ouders en grootouders, druiven aan de coöperatie. In een periode van 6 jaar heeft hij een conventionele werkwijze veranderd naar bio-dynamische wijnbouw. Het domein telt nu 10 hectare en maakt slechts 400 dozen wijn. Hij beschikt over acht verschillende plots/percelen, op het oosten en zuid-oosten gelegen, met een ondergrond van graniet, schist en klei. De wijnstokken zijn gemiddeld 45 tot 60 jaar oud. Hij heeft zo zijn eigen filosofie. Hij is ervan overtuigd dat de wijn gevoed wordt door de eigen omgeving. Hij gebruikt geen externe gisten, nauwelijks sulfiet en is wars van enzymen. Voor zijn wijnen gebruikt hij voor de helft de techniek van maceration carbonique en voor het ander gedeelte een traditionele vinificatie met ontsteelde druiven. De inweking duurt 10 tot 20 dagen. Na de malolactische gisting worden beide gedeeltes weer samengevoegd.
Hij kent 'zijn' Beaujolais heel goed en is ook biologisch gecertificeerd. Un vrai homme du Haut Beaujolais! Zijn enorm talent heeft hem doen uitgroeien tot favoriete producent van onder andere Robert Parker jr. en Jancis Robinson. De site van Robert Parker jr omschrijft zijn Brouilly 2015 als volgt: "The 2015 Brouilly Cuvee Vieilles Vignes underwent the same vinification and élevage as the Beaujolais Villages Vieilles Vignes. It offers candied black cherries and orange sorbet scents on the nose, bridled with an almost vitamin-like purity. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh, feminine, pastille-like dark cherry fruit. The winemaking is quite expressive here: a very transparent and carefree Brouilly that should drink well for 5-6 years. (This will be bottled with around 10 mg/L of SO2.)".
Jean-Claude's wijnen overweldigen je met hun levendigheid, vruchtvlezigheid en terroir. Zo elegant als viooltjes op een bed van stenen. Zijn Beaujolais Villages Vieilles Vignes is weliswaar geen Cru, maar is wel superieur in zijn prijsklasse en absoluut Cru waardig. Zijn grote broer Brouilly is van grote klasse. Zo lekker en sappig, maar toch met een fantastische terroir expressie en frisheid. In deze twee wijnen proef je dat er in de Beaujolais hele grote wijnen gemaakt worden.
Neal Martin van Wine Advocate/Robert Parker over Domaine Lapalu: "It is fast becoming tradition that whenever I visit Beaujolais, I section off a couple of hours to sit down with Jean-Claude Lapalu to taste through his latest vintage. There is no glitz here. His winery is functional, ostensibly a temperature controlled warehouse with a few vats and amphora inside, which I suspect is no obligatory for a natural winemaker. But hey, what else do you need to make wines? I asked Jean-Claude his view upon the 2016 vintage. "The wines are very right and pure," he answered. "The 2015 [vintage] was warmer and the wines more volatile, but 2016 was more pure and 'tendu.' You could say that 2015 was more a vintage for journalist! I picked from 15 September until 30 September, two weeks of harvest, which is a little later than usual. What I like about the 2016s is that it accentuates the aromatics. There was no hail in 2016, and yet, it was important to be vigilant throughout the year unlike in 2015." Those that might have perused my introduction and presumed that this writer is anti-natural wine should peruse my tasting notes for Lapalu for these most recent releases and, indeed, those included in previous reports. Here is a natural winemaker who knows what he is doing, clearly recognizing that in making wine without sulfur he needs to keep a watchful eye over everything from the vineyard up until bottling. I appreciate that he is always candid about his wines, always on the lookout for anything that might cause him problems. The result is a superb portfolio, one of the most interesting you will encounter in Beaujolais whatever your view on natural winemaking. Moreover, I have enjoyed enough in bottle to trust one of Jean-Claude's wines. In a strange way, I found several of his 2016s more like 2015 in style, often quite rich and hedonistic, as if with a soupçon of something Mediterranean and yet retaining fine balance and ample freshness."

Een permanente zoektocht naar fascinerende wijnen
Frankrijk heeft nog altijd een prominente plek in ons assortiment, maar ook andere landen als Spanje, Italie, Portugal, Duitsland en Oostenrijk staan nu vast op de kaart. De inkoop is in opvolging van Vojacek sr. sinds jaren in handen van Yoeri Vojacek. Hij ziet zijn bedrijf als kwaliteitsimporteur in de niche, die vooral niet meegaat met de massa. De gemene deler van het assortiment kan het best omschreven worden als een fascinerende verzameling van aromatische wijnen in Bourgondische stijl.... lees verder
